How to Design an Awesome Flyer (Even if You’re Not a Designer)

Designing a flyer is vital for your company and can help generate sales. Even if you are not a designer, you can still come up with an idea for a brilliant flyer, and it is not even that difficult. Creating a flyer is a lot like making a poster. Here is how you design an awesome flyer:

Purpose

The first step is to decide what you want to convey on your awesome flyer. Is it for a party? A meeting? A seminar? A workshop? Everything on the flyer – the words, images, and colours should describe the event.

Keep your target audience in mind as well. If you are writing for IT employees, throw in some IT lingo. You may need some technical terms to impress professional business people. However, if the words are obscure for those outside the specified field, avoid or simplify them. The key is to think about the customer and look at things from their point of view.

Make a diagram and sketch out the placement of images and text. A blueprint (design sample) might be handy. Then, outline the way you want to execute your master plan for a stylish flyer designing. You must then organize the information in a cohesive manner.

Intelligent Imagery

We will jump right into the fun part of a flyer: the pictures and colours. Images and bright colours are what make the flyer stand out. Great images pull people in and make the flyer memorable. Bad imagery sends the crumpled up, not-so-awesome flyer straight to the trash.

This is why you should avoid using clip art or bland stock images for your flyers. Make sure the image is relevant to the event as well. Having a cricket bat for a flyer about a consultant meeting is pointless. Images should add value to the flyer, so don’t just throw some on for the sake of it. However, before you add the images, you must first add the text, starting with the heading.

Handsome Headline

Your headline can be on any part of the awesome flyer, the top, the bottom, or the middle, as long as it stands out. People should know that it is a headline, so make it larger than the regular text. You can even make it in all uppercase letters. Headlines should just give a glimpse of the occasion.

It can even include a sales pitch, as long as it is something that will convince readers to take action. Do not include your company’s name in the headline. It should be catchy and the reader should be clear about what you’re trying to tell them.

Form Follows Function

Now, onto the more boring stuff. You may be familiar with the saying ‘form follows function’. It essentially means that the design of an object should be based on its intended purpose. Keep this in mind while preparing your awesome flyer.

Flyers are almost like slides in PowerPoint. They should be colourful, have images, and not much text. However, the colours and images you add should depend on your text, not the other way around. It helps to use the word ‘you’ a lot as opposed to the ambiguous ‘they’ or ‘them’. Adding ‘you’ addresses the reader and turns the attention to them. Rather than focusing on what your company can do, talk about how it helps the customer.

This is why you should get the text written down first before getting caught up with colours and font. Of course, you want your awesome flyer to be attractive for people to pick it up. However, what if they can’t read the words and are left confused by this? This ties into the next part.

Readability

A flyer is designed for two reasons: To attract people and to convert sales. This means people should be able to read and understand your flyer’s message.

Do not add a lot of fluff or repetitive text. Say only what must be said, as blocks of text and humongous words will fail to grab attention. A wall of text that just goes on and on will be tossed away. The same goes for text with a very tiny font. Be sure to highlight and emphasize any deals or offers, but only add information relevant to the reader.

This is why you need to make your text easily legible by increasing the size and having a clean font. Do not cram a large amount of text on your flyer. That is what brochures are for. Make it clear and concise. Use the back side for less important facts, such as a list of your products and services.

Do not forget to add your contact details. One tactic is to add the contact details at the bottom of the flyer. This is the last part people read and is more likely to stay on their minds.

You can divide your awesome flyer into sections, with different parts for images and text. Or, you can overlay the text upon the image. Whatever you do, make sure the text is visible in the background.

Pro tip: White text with a black outline can be read on almost any colour.

Proofread

Problems with grammar, spelling, and punctuation can at the very least be a nuisance and at the most lead to a misunderstood message. Some companies have even misspelled their own names on their flyers because they didn’t care enough!

Don’t be like them. You need to check the flyer for any mistakes in the text at least twice. Get it checked by some of your employees to see if they spot an error that you missed. Make sure all the links and the names of people are correct as well.

Print it Out

With that, you’re done. All that is left to do is to print out your awesome flyer. Take heed while choosing a printing service, though. You want to choose a service that understands your needs as well as your customer’s needs, like PrintStop.

As you can see, designing a great flyer is not that hard. It just takes seven easy steps. One technique that you can use is to perform A and B testing. Print two sets of flyers, hand them out at different places and see which one people like more.
